THE RETROSPECTIVE OF AN EXTROVERTED RECLUSE BY JENNIFER ELSTER MADE ITS FIRST PUBLIC DEBUT IN NEW YORK CITY IN 2016.
Conceptual artist Jennifer Elster recently debuted “THE RETROSPECTIVE OF AN EXTROVERTED RECLUSE” – the first time the artist has presented her work to the public. Culled from a large body of work amassed over Elster’s underground career, the show is the first of a multi-part retrospective the artist is in the process of revealing.
Previously working out of the public eye, Elster has spent years of deep excavation into the recesses of her mind and the minds of her subjects, analyzing the depths of human nature. Using words, paper, canvases, photographs, audio, video and performance art, Elster obsessively explores ways to deal with the severity of reality. With an unabashed look, the work delves rawly into such themes as life, love, loss and gender, race, and terrorism. The work serves as an effort to open a real discourse about our current times.
The retrospective spans Elster’s early beginnings with her conceptual work where she created characters with and for the late David Bowie, to the pivotal canvas “The Truth Is Valuable” from Elster’s first private underground show at The Shooting Gallery in New York City, and continues to tour many years of work from her prolific, reclusive state. The multidisciplinary exhibition offers access into the innards of Elster and her work.
Along with the canvases, photographs, and paper, are a selection of films that Elster conceived and directed: CEMETERY: IS DEATH FINITE (featuring Elster, Sugar Vendil, Trevor Gureckis and Crockett Doob). SORROW featuring Elster and THE PROLOGUE NO. 1-8 with extended versions (featuring Yoko Ono, Terrence Howard, Alan Cumming, Paz de la Huerta, Rufus Wainwright, the late Karen Black, Questlove and many others).
The opening and closing night events featured multiple performance art pieces created and performed by Elster as well as musicians Mariko Anura (The Metropolitan Opera) on the harp, Sugar Vendil (Nouveau Classic) and Trevor Gureckis (Life of Pablo) on piano, Derrick Little on the singing bowls and Julia Wilkins (Here, There, Nowhere) dancing.
