Took a spill on my bike yesterday. I’m good at hurting myself, apparently.
Just wanted to say hi and send best wishes to everyone for this new season.
I did have a fantastic time in NY this summer and got some important tasks done too. And now after hoard busting my life I will soon hoard bust my film and art treasure troves of hard drives. I look forward to sharing what I find: should be fascinating, let’s see.
Fun Future?, 2016, Gas mask and suit, sign and label in plexiglass box
18h x 24w x 30d in
April 28, 2023
I originally purchased this mask and suit in 1995. I didn't see it as a form of protection, rather pieces that I wanted to own and to be used in a creative way, some day. It was not until the Spring of 2016 that I took out the mask and suit and used it for a photographic series and to perform in at my solo exhibition, The Retrospective of an Extroverted Recluse in a performance piece entitled, Fun Future?.
The mask and suit would go on to be the center of performance pieces, video art, and protest art, warning that we did not want a lunatic to have access to our nuclear codes. I was horrified at the current state of the world, but at the time I did not feel the audience was taking any heed, rather finding the performance "cool," therefore missing the intent. After performing and warning throughout 2017, I finally gave up and retired the mask and suit into a plexiglass box with the Fun Future? sign.
In Take Heed, the boxed mask and suit are on display. Dark humor yes. Cultural commentary, absolutely.
There is a timeline of the art exhibited where each artifact’s date pieces together a reeling story of awareness, defiance, and insight of and about our times.
“Take a deep dive into the mind of one of New York’s most intriguing underground artists. People have been enthralled by both the exhibition and the David Bowie installation. With artifacts from the character of Ramona on display including the original Serrated Piece he wore and the Bullet Belt.”

“Serrated rage”
— Tyler Nesler, Interlocutor Magazine
“Multi-dimensional bliss”
— Benjamin Schmidt, The Knockturnal
“The attention grabber when you enter the space, a photograph of an extravagantly emoting man at the center of a webbing of black rags beside a hand-scrawled warning: GET AWAY FROM ME.Such truculent or fearful signage crackles throughout.” — Anthony Haden Guest, Whitehot Magazine
“Ramona was a character created by Bowie and his team for the storyline of his conceptual album [1. Outside]. There were about five characters. John Scarisbrick was hired to do the photography and brought me in. David and I spoke several times on the phone and for long periods before we went to London to meet him and do the photo shoot, which took place over five days.
On the original shoot I turned Bowie into Ramona by cutting a piece of fabric and adding a bullet belt and armor. In 2020 I then painted on that image as a 25 year commemoration of the original work. And then for this exhibition I cut pieces and had them come out from the image creating a web of sorts. To celebrate I went into my hoard and found the original cut piece, and bullet belt and they are on display. I also have the knife and stockings though not in the gallery at this time. Bowie was the last person to touch/wear the cut piece aside from me, so it is encased. “ — Jennifer Elster, artist
“I love this show. Strong and unusual.”
–Anthony Haden Guest (art critic, artist)

It was a natural progression that I should paint. Just like everything else.
My next exhibition Take Heed will be opening soon.
I could say so much,
but I will share more of what others have said.
I’m working on the writing materials at the moment.
I kind of want to drift.

An offering of beauty on behalf of Indigenous Peoples Day.
I put up a special tribute for Indigenous People’s Day on Monday, and then left it up as I continued to think on how Native American people have impacted the world, and also have personally impacted me with their kindness throughout the years.
It brought me back to one of the few times in my life that I was depressed. I went to Joshua Tree to meet my friend Mouchette. The actor Terrence Howard met me out there to be filmed in my film series.
I went for a ride on a tractor truck with a grounds worker, at our hotel, who was Native American. He recognized my pain. After, he sent me a pouch with good luck treasures in it. There was no way for him to benefit from the gesture. Just from him to me.
Meant a lot. Still does.
In this post I also included a dance to Amid the Beauty where Eimi Tanaku played piano and Mike Handelman played guitar during an evening Chief Perry of the Ramapough-Lenape tribe was supporting my cause.
Thank you.
I will continue to express my appreciation.

This week Jimi Hendrix featured in The Window Exhibition at The Development Gallery NYC as a tribute to Steve Hiett who took these photographs, and gave them to me many moons ago.
Steve was such a talent. I have a booklet that went along with this series of images and when I find it I will share more details.
I have had these images on my walls for over twenty years.
So on the third anniversary of Steve’s death I share his Jimi’s and I hope you enjoy them as I have over the years.

Here, me and Bowie.
This week we have begun installing the Bowie part of my multi discipline exhibition.
Over the last few years, and serious hoard busting with assistance, I found several artifacts from my work with Bowie from 1. Outside, which will each make their debut in my show this Fall at The Development Gallery.
.
I wanted to make the installation of the work as special as the work I created for him then.
It has been a delightful experience.
Still much to do, but closer.
I look forward to sharing the exhibition and it’s details.
Private appointments by invitation only in September.

May we do what we can to improve our predicament, and enjoy ourselves along the way!

How long we looked away
while Putin
prepared
for these days.
Here I am in 2017
performing Amid the Beauty.
Whenever I performed this song
I always felt like it was a barometer for our times.
Most times I sobbed (a real party upper) —awkward.
Until one day I didn’t.
And now this heinous invasion in Ukraine playing out real time while Chernobyl and Zaporizhzhia have been taken over by Russia.

There is so much to say about our times, and I will. I wanted to take a moment, on this International Womens Day, to remember
an extraordinary woman
whose name you do not know,
and is one of the most brilliant minds,
Lili Bussell, Phd.
She was born in Vienna,
a doctor and psychoanalyst by profession (so old she was friends with Anna Freud when she was young —not too many female doctors back then).
Here she was in her assisted living home, toward the end.
She would ask me to get close
so she could see my face
since her vision was impaired.
Face to face.
Broke my heart when she passed.
Thank you for our conversations and all that you gave me.
A gift.
And cheers to women!
I have collaborated with amazing women in my life,
and have deep friendships,
and I am grateful for them all.

“Another day survived.
The world is coming to the aid of Ukraine,
I wholly hope fast enough.
I wholly hope the Ukrainian people are equipped to handle this next barrage,
where the groundwork being laid
is
beyond nasty-heinous.
Morale is low from Russians,
it is said and seen.
But so many don’t understand what they are in.
Russia just bombed a Holocaust memorial center in Kyiv.
He bombed residential buildings. Hospitals.
Insulin center.
Demons revealed.
Painful to see the racism exhibited in Ukraine.
I am sorry to my black and brown brothers and sisters who I know feel this pain.
We will get through this too.
Sending strength and love to everyone during these unprecedented times.
.
I’ve been working on an art exhibition that speaks eerily to this moment.
If life allows the show will open

All respect for President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people.
Showing us how it’s done.
Standing together.
Zelensky is the same person who refused bribery to manufacture a Hunter Biden story in exchange for money(due) for military aid.
As target #1, America offered to pick him up yesterday, when he said I need ammunition not a ride.
A person of character and integrity.
He has asked for the thousands of Russian deceased soldier bodies to be picked up and brought back to Russia, and Ukrainian’s have set up an emergency communication for Russian families of soldiers who have been killed or captured.
It’s all so devastatingly sad.
The people of Ukraine are an inspiration to the world in their terrifying hours.
May justice be served.”
Jennifer Elster
And all respect to the absolute bravery of the Russian anti-war protesters who persist relentlessly during this dangerous time.

The Suffering
Having lived across the street from the WTC and been in the war zone of 9/11 makes me especially sensitive to the mind splitting tyranny of fear that must be going through the people of#Ukraine.
One would have thought the pandemic would have brought people together, instead the divide surges,
and now.
I’m beyond sorry for the people of Ukraine,
and for all of us.
We are dealing with a man that does not think like any of us.

STAY SAFE
Some of you may remember in the early days of Covid 19 I posted videos and wrote letters to elected officials urging people to wear masks when Fauci was saying it was not necessary to wear masks unless you were a health care worker. This time round I’m urging people to wear their masks when outside of direct pod, whether or not you have been fully vaccinated or have already had Covid 19 —and even though the CDC said that fully vaccinated people do not need to wear masks around other fully vaccinated people in small groups.
Stay safe!

WHY NOW?
From the opening night of The Retrospective of an Extroverted Recluse by Jennifer Elster in May 2016.
Like most of us, I am worried about the future of this country and the world. In these divided times, we need to come together even more so. Each one of us has the power to create a better world. Person by person. Individually and collectively. We can make a change. We shouldn't allow anger and hate to dominate this beautiful planet. It can get so much worse if we convince ourselves that our own footprint will not make a difference.

The Wake the F*ck Up Show
“A direct and ample warning aimed to help America face the dire times they are in and wake the f*ck up (not excluding myself). I offer a jolt to reality by reflecting reality. My work screams out from my semi-isolated world, attempting to penetrate a predominately-posed-awake, but actually (as we know) mostly-dormant America. The Wake the F*ck Up Show urges the viewer to act now during these times of utter corruption which, if neglected, could soon leave us bankrupt of our peace of mind, altogether. My work pleas for direct cultural shift and awareness amid masses of Americans who watch on with passivity as we lose further control.”

VOTE WISELY
#tbt
“Current news: The Great American Shit Show.
I made this political art video in 2016 as one of many efforts to warn Americans that Trump was going to win the election and become president and then we would have a lunatic as president with access to the nuclear codes. Everyone was convinced Hillary would win. We later learned the election was hacked.
Now we are walking into an election that is, reported by American intelligence and election security experts, going to be hacked again, and we need a major movement to raise social awareness on the simple measures provided to us by security experts of how we can implement a safer voting system. If not, the election is just going to be hacked. We will wake up post election and be so upset and there will be no recourse because we didn’t demand the four simple measures to safeguard our election. And then everything will get so much worse and our fun lives will be robbed from us and replaced with terror because we were favoring talking about who we are voting for or getting people to vote, but missed a detail that made the concluding difference.
That’s why the effort needs you.
So please, take heed. Don’t let our election get hacked.

After reading in the news this week that Democrats had declared Trump unstable for access to nuclear codes, I decided to play my #video Vote Wisely which I wrote, directed and performed in October of 2016 --back when my message in the video was considered extreme, or the video was regarded as "cool". As I worked yesterday I watched the video (where at times I even used the same exact wording as the news this week) as a reminder to myself at how slow this country is moving. It was a poetically unsatisfying moment filled with frustration of how much we could still get done even though the damage thus far so steep. Let us never give up striving for a better world. We can all do more. So let's!
Although I am disheartened over the state of the world, I absolutely LOVE life and never take its beauty for granted.
Have a wonderful day!
– Jennifer Elster November 16, 2017

If you think we're safe from a major catastrophe happening in America you are deluding yourself.
One doesn't need to be paranoid... rather mindful of unstable hands having access to nuclear codes.
Vote wisely.
